Coups Against Boehner Grows in the House

Citing frustration over lack of backbone by House leadership, at least two dozen Republican members continue pressing ahead on efforts to build opposition to John Boehner’s speakership.

Only months after he was reelected by members of the caucus, a revolt among the House Freedom Caucus over Boehner’s refusal to commit to defunding Planned Parenthood has served as the cause du jour.

Though Boehner’s rhetoric has been less explicit, he is expected to join course with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in decoupling the Planned Parenthood condition from the budget process in hopes of forestalling a second government shutdown.

A topic that boiled over in last night’s GOP debate, Republican leaders fear another government shutdown would prove disastrous in an election cycle that is likely already to give favor to Democrats among the American electorate.
