Earlier this week, the Obama administration admitted to a massive infiltration of federal databases and collection of personal information by what appeared to be Chinese hackers. It shows to be far worse than originally expected.
According to a report by federal employee union officials, hackers likely gained access of all personal information of both current and previous federal workers. This also included retired veterans.
In a letter to the federal Office of Personnel Management, President of the American Federation of Government Employees David Cox indicated that the agency neglected to encrypt social security numbers for millions of employees. It marked “a cybersecurity failure that is absolutely indefensible and outrageous”.
An OPM spokesman declined to comment further on the nature of the hacking, citing “security reasons.” The hacking of databases included up to 780 pieces of detail specific information which could result in future implications.
