James, a Veteran and West Point Grad, is new to GOP politics: he grew up in a Democrat household.
After his time in the service, James returned to the family business run by his father, John James Sr.
James Sr. is a Democrat from the Detroit area, and he has given thousands to liberal candidates over the years.
Records from the Michigan Secretary of State indicate James Sr. has given over $10,000 to Michigan Democrats since 2004.
James Sr. gave nearly $5,000 to former Governor Jennifer Granholm alone.
He has also given to former Michigan Democratic Party Chair Butch Hallowell, now a prominent attorney in Detroit.
The issue has confused some voters, provoking John James Jr. to mention in some of his advertising that he has different political opinions than his father.
