“President Trump thinks Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore ‘will do the right thing and step aside’ if the sexual misconduct allegations against him are true, the White House said in a statement Thursday,” per Fox News this morning.
Moore, the Republican candidate for Senate in Alabama, is currently denying allegations that he engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct, which a report in The Washington Post recounts and which four women have publicly alleged against him.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters on behalf of President Trump that “[l]ike most Americans, the president believes we cannot allow a mere allegation, in this case one from many years ago, to destroy a person’s life. However, the president also believes that if these allegations are true, Judge Moore will do the right thing and step aside.”
Many of his fellow Republicans are also calling for Moore to step down from his race against Democrat Doug Jones if the allegations are true, including former Massachusetts governor and presidential candidate Mitt Romney, as well as some sitting U.S. senators who had previously endorsed Moore, such as Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).
