Congressman Trey Gowdy has resigned from his position on the House Ethics Committee.

Gowdy cited the increased workload after being named as the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chair last summer when Jason Chaffetz retired.

According to reports:

“U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy has resigned from his post on the House Ethics Committee in an attempt to mitigate what he described as a challenging workload.

In a Jan. 10 letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan, the South Carolina Republican said his five years on the committee was an experience he would treasure but that he could not balance it with his other committee assignments.

Gowdy was recently named chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee after former Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, retired.┬áThe investigative post is considered one of Congress’s most powerful, serving as a “watchdog” over the White House.

“Four committee assignments, including a Chairmanship, is a challenging workload,” Gowdy wrote in his letter.”
