House Pushes Religious Freedom Bill

The Republican-led House is quickly building steam behind a bill that would prevent the federal government from taking legal action against non-profit organizations for opposition to same-sex marriage.

Last week an additional 50 names were added as co-sponsors of the bill bringing total support to 115 ahead of what may be a hearing and vote as early as this week.

Called the First Amendment Defense Act, the measure is a direct response to the landmark Supreme Court ruling two weeks ago which effectively legalized same sex marriage in all 50 states.

Though House leaders have yet to publicly indicate support for the bill, the speculation is that members are anxious to have a vote on the record ahead of the August recess in which most will host townhall meetings in their districts.
