Newly elected Republican Senator Joni Ernst’s hard-fought battle in Iowa surprised virtually everyone with a double-digit victory on November 4th. Her success has her tapped by the Republican Party to deliver its official response to President Obama’s upcoming State of the Union Address.
The first female combat veteran elected to Congress, Ernst’s fame among her colleagues in the Senate has garnered a great deal of attention with her matter-of-fact style and political instincts.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell beamed of Ernst during the announcement,
“Americans voted for change in the last election, and Joni understands that middle-class Americans want Congress to get back to work and that they want Washington to get refocused on their concerns, instead of those of the political class.”
Shedding a little light on her SOTU response, Ernst previewed:
“During this Congress, we must help grow a vibrant economy, see to it that our veterans receive promised quality care and that our military has the tools to defend our nation’s security, and ensure the federal government begins to run more effectively and efficiently.”
