Officially a “National Emergency?” White House Hosting Event on Opioid Crisis

“The Trump administration this week will make its official declaration of the opioid crisis as a national public health emergency, and President Trump will speak Thursday on combating the epidemic,” Axios reported yesterday.

The news outlet also states that Trump is expected to sign some form of executive document “directing Cabinet agencies to take actions addressing the crisis.” Congress will also be called upon to appropriate taxpayer funds to combat the epidemic.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “From 2000 to 2015 more than half a million people died from drug overdoses. 91 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose.”
